The name translates as "bridegroom's rice", from the custom of feeding it to a groom before his wedding. Tamil families long associated it with physical strength and stamina, and it kept its place in village diets for exactly that reason.

The grain is long and reddish-brown, with the bran left on. It cooks firmer than white rice and carries a distinct earthiness - closer to a red rice from anywhere else in the world than to Ponni. Its most traditional use is as kali, a thick porridge, though it's increasingly eaten simply as table rice by households moving away from polished grain.

It's a hardy variety that grows without much intervention, which is part of why smallholders kept it alive through decades when high-yield hybrids took over most paddy land. We buy it direct from those growers.

Cooking

Soak 3–4 hours. Cook 1:3 with water, about 35–40 minutes, or 4–5 whistles. It stays separate and firm rather than sticking together.
